Question 1

What is a free zone in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

A UAE free zone (also called a free trade zone) is a special economic area with its own regulatory authority. Businesses registered in a free zone benefit from 100% foreign ownership, tax incentives, simplified import/export procedures, and a fast company registration process. The UAE has over 45 free zones spread across all seven emirates, each targeting specific industries and business sectors.

Question 2

How many free zones are there in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

The UAE has over 45 active free zones across its seven emirates. Dubai hosts the most with zones like DMCC, JAFZA, Dubai Internet City, and DIFC. Abu Dhabi offers ADGM, Masdar City, and KIZAD. Sharjah has SHAMS and Hamriyah Free Zone. Other emirates — Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain — also offer competitive free zones like RAKEZ, AFZA, and UAQ FTZ.

Question 3

What is the cheapest free zone in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

Some of the most affordable UAE free zones include IFZA (International Free Zone Authority), SHAMS (Sharjah Media City), and UAQ Free Trade Zone, with packages starting from approximately AED 5,500–7,500 per year. Ajman Free Zone (AFZA) and RAKEZ (Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone) also offer budget-friendly options. The cheapest option depends on your business activity, visa requirements, and whether you need physical office space.

Question 4

Can I do business on the UAE mainland with a free zone license?

Accepted Answer

A free zone company can trade internationally and within its free zone but typically cannot sell directly to the UAE mainland market without a local distributor or commercial agent. However, recent changes to UAE Commercial Companies Law allow many free zone entities to operate more flexibly. Some free zones like DMCC offer dual licensing arrangements. If mainland market access is critical, consider a mainland trade license alongside your free zone entity.

Question 5

What documents do I need to register a free zone company in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

To register a UAE free zone company, you typically need: a valid passport copy (and UAE visa copy if applicable), a completed application form, a business plan (for certain activities), proof of residential address, a chosen trade name, and details of shareholders and directors. Some zones require additional documentation such as bank reference letters, NOC from current sponsor (if UAE-based), or educational certificates for professional licenses. Requirements vary by free zone.

Question 6

Which UAE free zone is best for e-commerce businesses?

Accepted Answer

The best UAE free zones for e-commerce include IFZA, DMCC, Dubai CommerCity (the region's first dedicated e-commerce free zone), and SHAMS. These zones offer specialized e-commerce licenses at competitive rates, integration with logistics providers, and access to digital payment infrastructure. If you need warehouse space, JAFZA and Dubai South are excellent options combining e-commerce licensing with proximity to Al Maktoum International Airport.

Question 7

Do free zone companies pay VAT in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

Yes. UAE free zone companies are generally subject to 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) on most goods and services, just like mainland companies. However, transfers of goods between designated zones (specific free zones recognized for VAT purposes) may qualify for 0% VAT under certain conditions. Services rendered to clients outside the GCC may also be zero-rated. It is essential to register for VAT if your annual turnover exceeds AED 375,000 and consult a UAE tax advisor for your specific situation.

Question 8

Can I open a bank account with a UAE free zone license?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A UAE free zone company can open a corporate bank account with major UAE and international banks such as Emirates NBD, Mashreq Bank, ADCB, HSBC, and Wio Business. Requirements include your trade license, shareholder passport copies, a business plan, and proof of office address. The process usually takes 2–4 weeks. Some banks have minimum balance requirements and may ask for additional documentation depending on your business activity.

Question 9

What is the difference between DMCC, DIFC, and ADGM?

Accepted Answer

DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) is the world's leading free zone for commodities trading, crypto, and general business — ideal for trading companies and SMEs. DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) is a premier financial hub regulated by the DFSA, designed for banks, insurance firms, fintech, and law firms operating under common law. ADGM (Abu Dhabi Global Market) is Abu Dhabi's international financial centre, also operating under common law, and is growing fast in fintech, virtual assets, and wealth management. DMCC suits general business; DIFC and ADGM suit regulated financial activities.

Question 10

How do I compare free zones to find the best one for my business?

Accepted Answer

To find the best UAE free zone for your business, compare the following factors: setup cost and annual renewal fees, visa allocation (how many residence visas are included), business activities permitted, office space options (virtual, flexi-desk, private office), location and proximity to airports or ports, tax benefits and legal advantages, and industry specialization.
